Cebuanos can now get easy access to a compendium of S&T information gathered from all over the world.
The Science and Technology Information Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-STII) recently developed the Philippines’s first digital science library.
The Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station known as “STARBOOKS” is a stand alone, onsite research kiosk that provides free access on S&T information for academic and livelihood use. It contains hundreds of thousands of digitized science and technology resources in various formats (text and audio/video) placed in specially design “pods” set in a user-friendly interface.
STARBOOKS aims to create interest in the field of science and technology which may increase the number of Filipinos enrolling in S&T courses; encourage great and curious minds to develop new ideas – inventions and innovations; and inspire one’s capacity for entrepreneurship and research.
The new academic and livelihood resource differs from other library portals as it does not require Internet connectivity to deliver information to its users. The kiosk has a built-in server that provides instant access to S&T information.
It is hoped that every barangay in the country will adopt STARBOOKS kiosk to make S&T information available to every Filipino. The Department also encourages public and private libraries / information centers to adopt STARBOOKS. DOST-STII is very willing to provide STARBOOKS content free-of-charge for educational and research purposes.
Students and researchers who wish to try this new technology may visit the library of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) located at the S&T Complex, Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City or you may contact for Ms. Ma. Arleen T. Arnejo at Tel. Nos. (032) 255-9734 / 418-9032.
