Seminar-workshop on Biorisk (Biosafety and Biosecurity)

Seminar-workshop on Biorisk (Biosafety and Biosecurity)

With the emerging importance of biorisk in the academe, medical facilities, and research institutions, it is a must that every concerned personnel or researcher is aware of the concepts of Biorisk. Biorisk is composed of biosafety and biosecurity. Learning and being aware of these concepts are very essential especially when dealing with biological facilities or even in health or research institutions.

Hence, to spread awareness on Biorisk in various research institutions and academe in the region, the Central Visayas Consortium for Health Research and Development (CVCHRD) in partnership with the National Training Center for Biosafety and Biosecurity (NTCBB) conducted a two-day seminar workshop on Biorisk. This was held last December 6-7, 2018 at the Cebu Doctors' University. The seminar-workshop was officially opened by the director of NTCBB, Dr. Raul V. Destura, by introducing the National Training Center for Biosafety and Biosecurity and its importance to the audience. Along with him was Dr. Adrian P. Ybanez, Dr. Gianne Eduard Ulanday, and Dr. Paul Dominic Longinos of the Biosafety Team, as well as Mr. Plebeian Medina of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).

Through the seminar-workshop, participants were briefly trained on various biosafety and biosecurity procedures, facilities, and/or equipment that may pose risk to people if handled improperly.  Moreover, the seminar-workshop also provided the participants knowledge on setting up biosafety committees in their respective institutions since biosafety clearances may now be required when proposing or conducting researches.
