DOST research council names new head

The Governing Board of the Department of Science and Technology - National Research Council of the Philippines named Dr. Carina Galvez Lao as its new executive director.

Dr. Lao is not new in the DOST System.  Before being chosen as the Council’s new Executive Director, Dr. Lao worked at the DOST Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Atmospheric Services Administration (PAGASA) for 39 years (1974 - present).  She was Assistant Weather Services Chief before joining NRCP.

She recently had been to China, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, and the USA to join in various workshops, fora, and symposia on multi-hazard mitigation, typhoon behaviour, strengthening meteorological services among others.

DOST seeks to promote locally-developed water filter technology

The inconvenient truth about water is out.

In a report five years ago, the Nobel-prize winning United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated that by 2080 nearly half the world’s population will be without clean water.

The New York-based United Nations Development Program (UNDP) echoes the same concern.

“The necessary sense of urgency is lacking,” UNDP said in a recent statement.

“The facts have been staring us in the face for years.

1.2.     With no pending administrative, civic or criminal case

2.    CSC Qualification
2.1.     Bachelor’s Degree
2.2.     3 years supervisory experience
2.3.     Career executive eligibility. In the absence of said eligibility, the candidate should be willing to undergo the process of obtaining eligibility within 1 year from assumption of duty.

3.1 Educational qualification
a. Preferably with Master’s Degree and with 5 years supervisorial experience

Job Description
The Regional Director for DOST VII shall provide leadership in the formulation of policies, strategies and implementation of programs/projects. He/She will be stationed at DOST VII, Lahug S&T Center, Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City and will directly report to the Undersecretary for Regional Operations.

DOST advisory body calls for 2014 scientific poster entries

The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), an advisory body of the Department of Science and Technology, is now accepting papers for the Scientific Posters Session, a poster competition to be held  as part of the organization’s  36thAnnual Scientific  Meeting (ASM) scheduled on July 9-10, 2014 in Manila.

The poster competition has six categories, namely Agricultural Sciences; Biological Sciences; Chemical, Mathematical and Physical Sciences; Engineering Sciences and Technology;  Health Sciences; and Social Sciences. 

The papers must be original and have neither been presented in any other event or forum nor entered in any other competition. It must be the minimum of an undergraduate thesis and must have no preliminary data.
